Primary Years

English

Literacy instruction in our Primary section is guided by the Victorian Curriculum, ensuring learning is accessible, engaging, and meaningful for every student. Our literacy approach includes daily shared reading experiences, where students continue to develop reading behaviours, such as following text, turning pages, as well as build comprehension, vocabulary, and listening skills. Students also take part in self-selected reading, which promotes independence, choice, and a love of books at their own level of interest and ability. Writing is supported through opportunities to engage in shared writing experiences, where teachers model the writing process and students contribute their own ideas, building confidence in communication and expression. Across all literacy learning, we embed the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), visual supports, and individualise communication systems to ensure every learner has a voice. This structured and supportive approach helps students strengthen foundational reading and writing skills while developing confidence and independence with language and communication.

Primary Years

Mathematics

In our Primary years, numeracy programs focus on building strong foundational skills through hands-on and meaningful experiences. Students explore early mathematical concepts such as counting, recognising numbers, sorting, measuring, and understanding patterns using concrete materials and real-life contexts. Numeracy learning is embedded into daily routines, as students follow individualised schedules, and participate in programs such as music, science and physical education, making maths relevant and engaging. Teachers provide explicit modelling, visual support, and structured routines to ensure concepts are accessible for all types of learners, while encouraging problem-solving and independence.

Primary Years

Cross- Curricular

In our primary section, students are provided with opportunities to practice their skills across all curriculum areas through programs such as gardening, community outings, music and science. During community outings, students use functional literacy and numeracy by reading signs, recognising symbols, and following directions. Our library program provides increased opportunities for students to develop a love of reading by exploring books, listening to stories, and making choices about texts. Specialist programs such as art, design, and technology, allows students to apply mathematical concepts such as shape, pattern, and measurement, while also developing expressive communication and language. Programs like swimming provide opportunities to follow instructions, use positional language, and count movements. By embedding literacy and numeracy across these experiences, students build practical, transferable skills that support independence and confidence.
