Mental Health and Wellbeing

At Croydon SDS, supporting students’ mental health and wellbeing is a core priority embedded in all that we do. We strive to create safe, predictable, and supportive environments where every student feels valued, respected, and included. Our wellbeing programs are carefully adapted to meet each student’s unique needs, focusing on developing social skills, emotional regulation, and resilience. Staff receive ongoing training to recognise early signs of distress and provide timely, effective support. We work closely with families, allied health professionals, and external agencies to ensure a consistent and collaborative approach to student wellbeing.

Through targeted interventions and whole-school initiatives, we promote positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging for all students. Students are taught to recognise their emotions and encouraged to express their feelings through the Zones of Regulation framework, as well as focussing on developing coping strategies in a nurturing environment. We also prioritise teaching self-awareness, mindfulness, and problem-solving skills as part of our curriculum. Celebrating small successes and fostering a growth mindset helps build confidence and motivation. Overall, Croydon SDS is committed to supporting the holistic wellbeing of every student to help them thrive both at school and beyond.

Mental Health Practitioner

The Mental Health Practitioner at Croydon SDS plays a vital role in promoting the emotional and mental wellbeing of students by supporting them to understand and manage their feelings effectively. A central focus of this role has been the school-wide implementation of the Zones of Regulation (ZOR) framework. This evidence-based approach helps students identify, understand, and communicate their emotions, while developing a personalised “emotional toolbox” of practical strategies to support self-regulation. By strengthening emotional awareness and regulation skills, students are better equipped to engage positively in their learning and achieve greater independence both at school and at home.
